DIY Winter Citrus Garland

1.09.2017

DIY Citrus Garland #naturalhomedecor
Citrus season in Arizona, hands-down, is my favorite time of year. It runs from December to April, which means not only am I eating and smelling one of my favorite tastes and smells on earth, but I also get to do it while enjoying our perfect Winter and Spring time temps!

Last year we were on a major natural kick (we still are, but most of it has become habit now, so it seems less relevant). So I decided to make all my own Christmas ornaments. I used popcorn, cranberries, and all types of citrus and I loved how it turned out so much I might have cried when we took down our sweet little tree. The citrus garland hanging on the stairs however, stayed up all year! I didn't see any reason to take down something so lovely.

So while these dehydrated citrus slices make excellent Christmas decor, I won't judge you if I walk in your house in May and see them still hanging around--you'll be in good company.

To make them, you simple pick out what citrus you'd like to use--pink grapefruit and oranges turn out best in my experience, but I've included lemons and limes in the past as well.

You then want to cut slices, not too thick or it will take a looooong time to dehydrate, but not too thin or else they'll burn (and you'll end up with some dark brown ones, like I got this year on accident--i didn't hate them though...) I'd say no more than half and inch, probably a little thinner. Pat the slices gently with a towel or napkin to absorb some of the excess moisture. Turn on your over to a low temperate around 125°. Arrange the slices onto cooling racks and put the cooling racks on cookie sheets--I recommend putting similar sized slices together so if your grapefruit take longer than you lemons, you can just removed one tray. Check on them every hour and you can flip them half way, especially if you're not using cooling racks. The house will smell so insane, you'll want to scream for all your neighbors to come take a wiff, so they can share in the euphoria that is drying citrus.

The slices should look like the majority of the moisture is gone, but not be brown (unless you want some brown ones). When you take them out, let them cool on the racks. They will still be a little tacky, but will continue to dry for the next few days. Feel free to make ornaments or a garland or window charms, whatever your heart fancies, as soon as they're cooled. They look especially beautiful hanging somewhere where they can be backlight by a window, so their colors shine through--you don't have to wait til they're bone dry to create with them!

Off to eat a grapefruit! 👋

As you can see, Poppy is VERY suspicious of cameras. She genuinely despises getting her picture taken, and hates when I am getting mine taken as well. If you didn't know animals could give you the sink-eye, they can. They can do oh-so-many more things than you ever thought possible--such as ingest your favorite pair of shoes, barf on your sheets in the night and then wake up completely hogging your pillow, like they own the place, or meticulously clean out your nostrils against your will with their tiny pink tongues, and yet somehow after all the madness and even during it sometimes, they can make you believe they're the cutest thing on the planet and deserving of all your love. And she has it. I love that little Poppy Reh, even when I hate her.
In other news, I finally bit the bullet and cashed in a Nordstrom Gift Card I've had since my birthday in november on these beautiful ankle booties. I've been dying over them for about 7 months, and since I never found anything I liked better, I knew it was time (SO THANK YOU MA NIELSON FOR SUBSIDIZING THESE BEAUTES!) They're keeping me cozy in this chillier than normal weather we've been having :)
do you feel a little creeped out? good.

the things i worry about on my drive to work...

1.15.2014

Yesterday, as I was driving to work, I was listening to KOOL 94.5--a favorite radio station of mine since I was a kid--it's slogan is "Good times, Great Oldies, Kool 94.5" so as you might have guessed, it plays 'Oldies' and because most people can find Oldies palatable, it is commonly played quietly at dentist and doctor's offices.

Well, yesterday, on my way to work, a catchy little tune that I didn't recognize came on--as I continued to listen, my car dancing stopped and my face started turning red from embarrassment--I had heard jokes about this song in the past, but somehow had never actually heard it--"Afternoon Delight" was on my radio station--the same radio station that plays at my dentist office. I started sweating a little at the thought of sitting under that iridescent dental light with a spit sucker and several metal tools in my mouth, with my dentist overhead bobbing his head and mindlessly singing along to the radio.

You guys, I would die. DIE!

How did that song ever pass for radio approval back then!? It is full of such insane innuendoes that they might as well not be innuendoes at all! I don't know what I will do if my daymare ever comes to past--I've decided that I must call the radio station before all my dentist appointments and plead with them to take that off their playlist. I must take control of this situation. I must.

Yuletide

1.10.2014

Christmas was beautiful this year--I was feeling like such a scrooge--I was super busy at work and had no desire to decorate or buy presents, but once we picked out our tiny tree from the Home Depot parking lot, something changed within me. I decided to bake 6 dozen of my favorite cookies to deliver to all our neighbors. People were so excited and one lonely lady invited us in and we spent a good hour chatting and letting our dogs play with each other. I'm always so afraid to bother people, but when I suck it up and put myself out there, it are those times that I have such great experiences. I just wish I could remember that more often!

Christmas morning at Andrew and Reachel's is alway a joy. They have such great taste, so it's always fun to see what they get, and being around kids always makes the morning so much more fun! Plus they always have a nice European breakfast spread or cheeses, bread and yogurt parfaits. It was sad to see the holidays go!

Did you have a good Christmas? Do tell!

simple sally + a few tunes

12.17.2013

It's a busy week--I'm working feverishly with my partner to plan an influencer's conference in Salt Lake as well as doing a ton of 'end of the year'/christmas planning for the position I volunteer in at church. I'm the secretary of the primary, so it's a lot of paper work (which is luckily something I actually sort of enjoy). It's weird, when I look at my to-do list, I should feel overwhelmed, but instead, I feel excited. I need to be busy to feel fulfilled, I guess. I busy week also makes me really appreciate my weekends, so wish me luck!
What do you do to stay motivated?
I think my helper is good music! {Like this song or this one}

red.

12.16.2013

I find it funny that every year around Christmas time I get this subconscious desire to dress in festive reds. Red is generally my 2nd most feared color (yellow being the first), but once December rolls around, I'm suddenly drawn to it. This coat was a gem of a find. It's a great color of red that doesn't make me feel like a tomato face. There really are few things worse than feeling like a tomato face, let me tell ya. Here's a look back at almost exactly two years ago when i was on my festive colors kick--also happen to be listening to that song earlier today...not much has changed in the last two years, i guess!

p.s. the movie I talked about on Friday was The Bewitching of Ben Wagner!

Do you have a hard time with any specific colors? Why?

attack of the 90s.

12.04.2013

The time has come again where i debate chopping the mane or perming it. Or maybe one, then the other. I LOVED the red (and will likely go back someday) but it was hard to get the color just right every time, so i think i'm taking a little break from that. I also sometimes miss the blonde, but don't miss the damage and upkeep. But that leaves me in a really boring place of faded-out, flat hair on top and fried ends that need to go. I found a really cute cut that Marcus even loves, but it's pretty dang short--shorter than i've had since 2nd grade! So i'm really nervous about it.

Anyone have suggestions? Put links on the comments if you've seen anything you think would be cute!

Have you done anything brave with you look lately?

Our hot-water heater broke--three months ago.
Let me tell you--no hot water is a great way to get you on board with not wasting water.
I was toughing it out up until this month.
It finally got pretty cold, so I've been taking my showers at my mom's house (luckily she's right up the road and poppy loves playing over there)
Last time I showered there I forgot my jeans, I had worn this flannel over there and it served as a temporary fix while I blowed dry my hair.
But then I liked it--so it stayed.
Marcus thought I was pretty cool when I got home.
My mom did not--she took me out to lunch for my birthday and couldn't believe I was wearing a shirt for a skirt. She should most certainly be used to my style shenanigans by now, she knew me in high school.

What's the weirdest thing you've ever worn in public?

p.s. marcus is fixing the hot water heater this week! yippee!
