A Complete List of Your Postpartum Needs//That everyone is too embarrassed to talk about

1.23.2017

Before I had Simon I had gotten all the emails and read all the lists on what you needed to pack in your hospital bag and what things you needed at home. I thought I was set, and I figured if there was anything I was missing once he arrived, I'd just pop out of the house and pick it up from the store. Well none of those lists prepared me for the excruciating healing process my body was going to be experiencing the months after delivery. Granted, I had a pretty traumatic situation, and I know some women who are just bouncing around a few days after delivery, like nothing happened, but my advice would be to assume you may not be those women and you may be like me. Unable to get out of bed without your husband hoisting you out. Taking 5 minutes to carefully and gently maneuver your way down the stairs. Carrying your donut pillow/seat with you in the car, to restaurants, to you in-laws and everywhere in between. It was not pretty and it was a very humbling/humiliating time and I feel like a lot of that was because I just had NO IDEA it could be like that--and for so long.

No matter how wonderfully you recover, your body just went through a hell of a lot. And you'll probably never feel cooler in your life, than when you go through all that and they hand you that amazing and perfect baby at the end. But gosh darn it, your body still has a hell of a lot to do after and so here's an extensive list to make it a little less hard, a little more comfortable, and maybe make you feel a little less awkward talking about those rips and tears and dreaded hemorrhoids that are a lot more common than people are comfortable mentioning.

I put out a mass question on my IG stories last week and I think I had over 100 answers from woman of things they needed or wish they would have had--here were the most common answers!

  • For Healing:
  • Witch Hazel Pads--Like Tucks
  • Peri-bottles in every bathroom (The hospital has them, beg to get sent home with an extra one)
  • Padcicles (Also from the hospital, these are frozen pads that sooth your poor, sore vagina--hoard these!)
  • Hemorrhoid Cream--yup, even if you avoided them through pregnancy, there's a very good chance you'll get the joy of experiencing them from all that hard pushing :/
  • Dermaplast--bluelid (Also from the hospital--ask for extra!)
  • Earth Angels Mama Spray (a natural option)
  • Capsulized Placenta (didn't try this, but I've heard amazing stories regarding milk supply and mental health)
  • Mesh Undies from hospital (just keep requesting more while you're there, so you don't ruin all your underwear when you get home!)
  • Adult Diapers--Depends fit/flex diapers or Depends silhouttes (The pads shift around, so once you're home, I highly suggest just suckin' it up and wearing adult diapers while the discharge is heavy)
  • Maternity undies (I really want to try Thinx brand for when the bleeding isn't so heavy)
  • Donut seat/pillow (the swelling, the stitches and the hemmorhoids do not make a comfortable seat, so these keep that area free of pressure, plus you'll look so fancy, requiring a personal pillow everywhere you go!)
  • Stool Softener/Digestive Support
  • Tushy Bidet (if you're really lucky, those hemorrhoids won't go away for a long time and this is a toilet attachment that keeps things hygienic and irritation free. Europeans have been using these for a looooong time, I'm not sure why we've been so slow to adapt, but I have one, and I attest that they are very cool.)

  • For Breast Feeding/Pumping:
  • Warming Pads and freezer packs for sore breasts
  • Nipple Cream
  • Hands-Free bra if pumping
  • Nursing Basket with Easy snacks and new toys for other siblings (I thought this was such a cool idea, you just pull it out when toddler needs a distraction while you nurse)
  • Nursing Pads--Lansinoh Brand is my favorite!
  • Snacks for mama (that can be opened one-handed and aren't loud to chew)
  • Dry Shampoo
  • Nursing Pillow (your back and neck will experience a whole new level of soreness from nursing, you need all the support you can get!)
  • Milk Catcher (while you nurse on one side, the other breast will just drip and drip and if you're like me, SPRAY!, so these will catch the extra milk so it doesn't go to waste)
  • Burp Clothes (both for spit up and for wiping up the milk that drips from your boobs)
  • Water Bottle that keeps water cold in every room (gotta stay hydrated to keep your milk supply up!)
  • Comfy nursing chair
  • For Changing:
  • Puppy Potty Pads (for boy moms especially--for the first month, S would pee EVERY SINGLE TIME we opened his diaper. We started keeping stacks of potty pads around where we'd change him, we'd throw one under him so when he started to wiz, we could throw a corner over him and avoid the major clean up. I always stick some of these in shower gifts if they're having a boy)
  • Night Lights
  • So many diapers
  • Extras:
  • Pre-Written Thank you notes
  • Frozen Breakfast Burritos/waffles/overnight oats (you get lots of dinners brought in, but not a lot of breakfast options, so something to think about!)
  • Fresh fruit and veggies (Most of the dinners that were brought to me were delicious, but rich and creamy with not a lot of fresh stuff, so I was majorly craving just a big bowl of cut of fruit or veggies and dip!)
Comment anything we missed! Happy healing!

DIY Winter Citrus Garland

1.09.2017

DIY Citrus Garland #naturalhomedecor
Citrus season in Arizona, hands-down, is my favorite time of year. It runs from December to April, which means not only am I eating and smelling one of my favorite tastes and smells on earth, but I also get to do it while enjoying our perfect Winter and Spring time temps!

Last year we were on a major natural kick (we still are, but most of it has become habit now, so it seems less relevant). So I decided to make all my own Christmas ornaments. I used popcorn, cranberries, and all types of citrus and I loved how it turned out so much I might have cried when we took down our sweet little tree. The citrus garland hanging on the stairs however, stayed up all year! I didn't see any reason to take down something so lovely.

So while these dehydrated citrus slices make excellent Christmas decor, I won't judge you if I walk in your house in May and see them still hanging around--you'll be in good company.

To make them, you simple pick out what citrus you'd like to use--pink grapefruit and oranges turn out best in my experience, but I've included lemons and limes in the past as well.

You then want to cut slices, not too thick or it will take a looooong time to dehydrate, but not too thin or else they'll burn (and you'll end up with some dark brown ones, like I got this year on accident--i didn't hate them though...) I'd say no more than half and inch, probably a little thinner. Pat the slices gently with a towel or napkin to absorb some of the excess moisture. Turn on your over to a low temperate around 125°. Arrange the slices onto cooling racks and put the cooling racks on cookie sheets--I recommend putting similar sized slices together so if your grapefruit take longer than you lemons, you can just removed one tray. Check on them every hour and you can flip them half way, especially if you're not using cooling racks. The house will smell so insane, you'll want to scream for all your neighbors to come take a wiff, so they can share in the euphoria that is drying citrus.

The slices should look like the majority of the moisture is gone, but not be brown (unless you want some brown ones). When you take them out, let them cool on the racks. They will still be a little tacky, but will continue to dry for the next few days. Feel free to make ornaments or a garland or window charms, whatever your heart fancies, as soon as they're cooled. They look especially beautiful hanging somewhere where they can be backlight by a window, so their colors shine through--you don't have to wait til they're bone dry to create with them!

Off to eat a grapefruit! 👋

Nursing Friendly Tops

2.16.2016

With Simon nursing less frequently these days, I have a little more flexibility on what I wear, but man oh man, that first year, access to the milkies rules the wardrobe! I found that trapeze style tops were my jam because I Simon refused to allow a blanket or any kind of cover over him (and frankly, I wasn't too keen on it either, because it's HOT!) but these style tops sort of acted as a cover so you could still be somewhat discrete. All the extra fabric just kind of billows on his cheek while he nurses and drops down quickly should he unlatch. It also hides that post baby belly for the few months it takes to go down. As for dresses--they pretty much have to have buttons or be wrap dresses or they're a no go. Anyways, this is another list I put together for my darling friend Alex, but thought I'd share with you all too!

37+ Weeks & Baby's Getting Ready

12.17.2014

At this week's appointment I made Marcus come along so I had someone to grab onto while getting uncomfortably checked for dilation--it worked for a minute, but my instincts could not be fooled and once things got really uncomfortable, my body knew who was to blame for the current pain, and I was clinging to the doctor's shoulders as well. Luckily she gave me good news at the end of the appointment. Baby was still very low, I was 2 cm dilated and 75% effaced. She asked me how I felt about spending Christmas in the hospital, because she was fairly certain that was inevitable, I told her as long as he's healthy, there's no place I'd rather be! I'm trying hard not to get my heart set on an early baby, but let's be honest...my heart is set on it.

I recently got criticized for not being more mushy about being pregnant, and while I'm truly grateful that things have gone relatively smoothly, that baby appears to be in good health, and I fully acknowledge that growing human beings inside of us is, like, totally rad and all, I'm not going to BS that this whole being pregnant is something that I really enjoy doing, because I don't.

I know once this baby is in my arms and a part of my life, I'm going to be crazy about him, but right now, he's just something that makes me highly uncomfortable--so sorry if I admit that I prefer babies outside the womb (watch me eat my words when I can't sleep or shower...:)).

I just can't wait to meet this little guy and start to learn who he is, what he looks like and what familial traits he inherits. Forty weeks is a long time to be pregnant--I'm ready, so let's do this little guy!

36 Weeks & Drama at the Docs

12.09.2014

This week was the week I've been simultaneously dreaded and counting down the days for. At 36+ weeks, it was my first internal exam OB appointment and while that whole concept is uncomfortable to me on multiple levels, I've been having so much pressure in my pelvis, I was dying to know if I was progressing!

When I got into the office, I did my pregnancy patient duty and left a urine sample in the bathroom, then they called me back for weight and blood pressure. The lady taking my blood pressure took a second look at my chart and then back and me and told me my blood pressure was high AND they had found protein in my urine--both are signs of Pre-Eclampsia (a very serious condition during pregnancy). I immediately asked what else could cause these symptoms, because for some reason the idea of me having Pre-Eclampsia just did not seem right. I had always passed my OB appointments with flying colors, and I had no swelling, which is a big sign of P.E., so I didn't really stress out, while I waited for the doctor to come check me.

I did, however, run through the scenario of my doctor coming in and telling me I would have to go straight to the hospital for an emergency C-Section, and the whole Birth Plan I had so carefully been devising in my head this entire pregnancy and had finally written out the very night before, becoming completely void, and having to call Marcus, who was home painting our bathroom to tell him to grab my bag and meet me at the hospital. And while in my mind, it sounded like basically the worst case scenario and everything I had been dreading, I still felt perfectly calm about the whole thing, so I knew either that was what might happen, and I could be at peace with it, or it was all going to resolve itself and that's why I wasn't feeling panicked.

The doctor came in and was informed of the situation, she looked at my legs to check for swelling and also looked a little confused at the readings from the nurse, but she checked baby's heart beat and did her exam and let me know that baby was sitting very low and I was dilated to a little more than a 1, she then saw Baby kick one of his monster kicks and laughed, then saw another mega kick on the complete other side of my belly and looked a little confused, she felt around and she then informed me she wasn't sure he was actually head down, and wanted to do an unplanned ultrasound--which is rare, as our office only does the gender ultrasound, and that's it.

So, I was concerned about the idea of having a breech baby, but also excited that I got to have a little peek at my baby. She did a super quick look and was relieved to tell me his head was down and even gave me a little look at the baby's face--which was completely adorable, by the way.

They then had me rest for a bit and took my blood pressure once more--this time it was right back down to my regular healthy range--she told me my body was just done being pregnant and she wanted me to take it really easy for the next few weeks. Basically she wasn't concerned about P.E.

It was a weird appointment, not anything of what I was expecting, but it was nice to know that even when presented with all my fears, I felt so calm and while I hope everything goes smoothly and like we hope and expect, I know I can handle whatever may arise.

I feel strong.

Did you have any pregnancy scares?

35 weeks and loving the moments we're in.

11.28.2014

All week I've been crossing my fingers and toes that this nasty cold I've had would let up in time for me to be able to taste Thanksgiving Dinner (lunch at our house) and I am happy to announce that my gratitude for a working sense of smell, and in turn, the ability to taste, is alive and well.

The meal did NOT disappoint! I just kept asking myself, WHY DO WE ONLY EAT STUFFING ONCE A YEAR!? My mom's is seriously the best.

Marcus and I woke up early and turned on the We Bought a Zoo soundtrack as we peeled and boiled 20 pounds of potatoes. It was such a beautiful morning together in our little home. I kept getting an overwhelming feeling of happiness by simply working together in the kitchen with my husband as we looked forward to a day of good food and family. I really like this guy I married and as excited and impatient I've been to have this little baby, today I was just so happy with the little family I already have in my home. I knew I needed to take these last few weeks to really appreciate our alone time. I know it becomes harder to come by, once the little ones start showing up. So, today, I'm grateful for my little family of three (including Poppy, of course!).

Non-Maternity Jeans, FTW!

11.20.2014

Oh man, looking at these photos is making me laugh, I remember when I shot this video with Reachel, I thought I was getting prettttty big--HA! I'm looking at myself in jealousy, longing for the comfort of that barely stretched belly, I don't even thing I was using the rubber band trick at this point. (People, if you don't know the rubber band trick, please see pin here--it is the lifesaver of pregnancy).

And even though I am now utilizing above trick, I am still wearing these jeans (when I'm not in leggings, lounging around the house) and they are still 1,000,000 times more flattering AND comfortable than the one pair of maternity jeans I finally bought from Gap, which I never wear because they hurt my stomach and they give me a saggy butt.

So, heed the advice of the Empress, Reachel, you won't regret it.

32 weeks and I'm really pregnant//

11.13.2014

For a long time during this pregnancy, I've felt so much bigger than I was used to (obviously!), but when I would wear certain things, people didn't even seem to notice that I was or if they did, they thought I was was earlier than I was, but those times are gone!

It's to the point where everywhere I go, people are looking at my belly. I finally understand those 'busty women woes' you've heard of--you know that one's that feel like people are always staring at their chests, only for me, they're staring at my bump and there's no denying it. Luckily, I'm not a self-conscious person, so it doesn't bother me, but I just find it funny to look around and see everyone I interact withs eye's going straight down.

It's getting harder to get out bed or out of the car.... or bend over and play fetch with Poppy, or find any shirts that aren't belly shirts, or eat any decent sized meals, but I know I still have several weeks to go, so I'm trying to grasp the fact that I still have a whole lotta growing left to deal with, so I better just suck it up.

This little guy better deliver on the cuteness because pregnancy is not super fun in my opinion and I'm having a hard time imaging that I'm going to have to do this again someday! HOLY MOLY! *insert sweating emoticon*

Hope your day is going well, it's almost the weekend!

My Simple Pregnancy Essentials//

11.07.2014

I've been a fan of this stuff long before there was a human growing inside of me, but for whatever reason my skin and lips have become even more dry since said human showed up, so know it's a must have before I go to bed and right when I wake up. I love it, because most lip balms I've tried have a weird smell or chemical taste, but this one is the golden ticket for sure.

I tried this after I saw it recommended by Sydney, from The Daybook. So glad I did. I'm not sure if this is a normal pregnancy symptom or not, but I get really sick (nauseated, dizzy, achy) when I have anything restrictive on my torso region. I can't handle any tightness around my ribcage or my stomach, so all my normal, sized, wired bras were NOT working. This bra basically saved my life. It's super stretchy and has (removeable) lining so you don't have to worry about things showing through that you don't want showing through. I don't have experience with this yet, but I'm guessing it will be nice for nursing as well, because it's so stretchy; I guess we'll see if it makes my Post-Pregnancy List...

This is almost surely my absolute favorite thing on the list. I can not tell you how this pillow has improved my life! People who know me in real life are probably so sick of hearing me talk about this gem, but I'm sorry, I'm an evangelist for it. It is so freaking comfortable--Marcus (and Poppy) try to steal it from me almost every night because whatever foam/stuffing they put in this thing is magic. Plus the cases are so darn cute! When we went on our trip to the PNW, I didn't bring it and my SIL said she had an old pregnancy pillow I could use. It was the same basic shape, so I figured it would work just as well. People, IT DID NOT. It was terrible and you should not buy any other body pillow than the Bump Nest, because it trumps all. Amen and amen.

Alright, this is a new find this week and I'm majorly in love with it. I started having pain in my sacroiliac joints when I'd be on my feet a lot, so I went to my chiropractor and he said it was due to my loosening ligaments in my...FEET. He adjusted the arch of my foot and to my surprise the pain was gone within a few hours. He told me I could use this percussion massager on my arches to do mini-adjustments at home. It doesn't work quite as well as when he does it, but it definitely helps! Plus this thing feels so good on my back and shoulder blades and Marcus loves it too. Twenty-five dollars well spent, I'd say!

As I mentioned, my skin has been really dry and dead looking and it's really got me feeling down because a flakey face is not a pretty sight, but I recently remembered that when I was living in freezing/windy Idaho, my dermatologist recommended I try this moisturizer and it saved me then. I picked some up a couple of weeks ago and I've already seen a lot of improvement on my face. I usually just use it at night before bed because it's pretty thick and makeup doesn't really adhere to it, but it's a great night cream.

Marcus picked up a travel size bottle of this on our last trip and he fell in love. We then got a big bottle of it and so I started using it as well. It's a natural/organic soap and because of the peppermint oil, it's super cooling and refreshing. BE CAREFUL not to get it in your eyes though--it's crazy painful, but if you can keep it clear of those babies, I'm happy with this soap.

I love having this longer length robe to throw on if the UPS guy shows up in the morning before I've gotten dressed (let's be honest, sometimes it's after noon and I still haven't gotten dressed, but I digress...) It's super soft and the midi-length provides the modesty to be able to open the door, without being so long that it trips you up. I think it will be nice to bring in my hospital bag as well, or I might order this cute one from Gap.

Now this kimono robe is quite a bit shorter, but it's so dang pretty and even though it looks and feels totally luxury, it's machine washable! I like to wear this one when I'm having a lazy weekend morning at home with Marcus and I'm not ready to get dressed (I'M NEVER READY TO GET DRESSED! Getting dressed while pregnant is SO HARD!) but I still want something pretty on. It also looks super cute with a pair of leggings on underneath, now that the mornings and evenings are finally cooling off :)

Alright, I don't claim to be someone who does tons of research on making sure everything I use is perfectly natural, but I do try to have an idea of not putting totally toxic stuff on my body, especially now that I'm carrying a growing human inside of me! So I was looking for a lotion that smelled yummy and was relatively natural. I had gotten a sample of this at a blogging conference I attended and Marcus loved whenever I put it on, so I read up a little more on it, and thought it sounded pretty good, so I ordered a full bottle and I'm a super fan. Next time I think I'll try one of the other scents, just to mix it up. I use this all over my body, but most often on my belly, in hopes of keeping it moisturized enough to avoid/minimize stretch marks...fingers crossed!

So, I'm sure you've heard the idea that a pregnant woman's sense of smell is on high alert, I can't say that mine has gone up that much because I was always at the top of the scales with my super senses, but smelling good is of high importance, and it's quite important that Marcus smells good if he wants to get...snuggly with this pregnant lady. Commodity sent us a pack of their sample scents and this one was both Marcus' and my favorite smell by far. He got a full size bottle and every time he wears it, he get's lucky, let's just be honest. Ha! It's so good.

Alright! Your turn!
I'd love to hear things you've tried and loved.
What am I missing to make this pregnancy more comfortable? Anything on the list you're excited to try?

As always, thanks for reading and commenting! Feel free to pin this post if you found it interesting!

thirty-one weeks and my five senses

11.03.2014

Seeing: My belly like a wave as this baby boy jabs his little heel up and down my right side.
Hearing: The Essential James Taylor Album while I organize a drawer full of tiny baby socks and hats and onesies in the nursery, the same drawer I've opened and closed and moved things around in at least three other times in the past few weeks--i need this little baby to come start wearing these mini things before i lose my mind!
Smelling: This candle in gogi berry from anthropologie. It's my all time favorite house smell. It's on it's last burn, but luckily I have my birthday discount this month--time to restock! :)
Tasting: Cold, soft ice coated in a little bit of cran-apple juice--it's my latest addiction.
Feeling: Acid in my throat and stomach after every meal I eat and wondering how my belly could stretch any tighter than this. Mostly feeling ready for the baby to be in my arms and not in my uterus.
