For the last few weeks Marcus has been obsessed with reading every book he can find on finances (particularly how you can have your money work for you, so that you have more time to do what you want in life, rather than work for someone else). He's even got me on board, after a trip to the library, I am currently reading "Rich Woman" and feel quite inspired to get into investing or starting my own business.

You see, we both come from families who owned their own businesses--we each talked to our dad's this week and neither them nor our grandfathers have worked for anyone other than themselves since they graduated college! Clearly, the entrepreneur spirit runs deep.

I've always hated having anyone have control over my time--and marcus has more recently came to that conclusion about himself--so we're on the quest to take back the control.

For me, it's not about being filthy rich and having everything i've ever wanted--it's about not having to think/stress about money--financial freedom, so that i can DO all the things I've always wanted to--life's too short to spend most of it doing something you're not crazy about, right?!

anyone have any great tips for us/books we should read?

My husband is a finance student here at BYUI, and he started a blog (he calls it a website because blogs are "girly") but it's all about investing and retirement accounts you guys should check it out! He also has some book recommendations! http://www.moneyeducation101.org

We've been having a lot of the same discussions. He works at a top investment management firm and honestly doesn't really love it. He does the same thing everyday and works crazy long hours and while the compensation is pretty good, what is the point if you dont love what you do??

PS Have you ever read the mr money mustache blog? My husband is a bit obsessed.

I don't have any tips on books but I agree with you! I want to do something on my own in the future so I can manage my time and my money better

My husband and I both own businesses. If you're looking for a quick path to being in control of your own time I wouldn't recommend this route at all. If you're seriously thinking about being entrepreneurs, the book I wish I'd read two years ago is "The E-Myth." Take a look at this before you start any business!

My best advice is to continue to work for someone else and lower your living expenses drastically. Save and invest 70-90% of your current income. I second the Mr. Money Mustache blog; it's the more readable version of Early Retirement Extreme which is also a great book. Both describe the basic formula of "lower living expenses drastically, bank most of your paycheck, then be financially independent in a handful of years and not have to worry about working for money."

Also, I don't think you have to love what you do. I think that's completely over-rated. I'm a weaver. I like weaving, I enjoy it-I'm not crazy passionate about sitting behind a loom all day. But I enjoy it, and it is something that works within my lifestyle and makes me money. The truth is: passion would not make me any more excited about filing quarterly taxes, dealing with shipping labels, and the monotony of weaving 100 scarves in eight weeks for craft fairs. Passion would not get me through that. Work and effort gets me through that. But I do the work so I can feed my passion: traveling.

Traveling is what I love to do the most; it's difficult but not impossible to get paid to travel as a job. I like this philosophy better: Rolf Potts in "Vagabonding" (another book worth reading!) talks about working at any job you can find, then taking that money so you can go do what you love to do outside of work. And there's my novel-length comment for you! :-)

My husband and I feel similar. Me probably more so than Ryan, but its hard to start. Maybe once we move to a less expensive state we can both start. I'm actually working on my website for my business that I'm starting. I'm definitely going to check out the book you listed. I definitely love the idea of just being financially stable and having time to be with my husband and do things we enjoy. Also love your sweater!

Have you ever read Business of the 21st century? My husband and I went through the same thing. We were ready to become our own bosses and would love to have not only financial freedom but TIME freedom to live our lives the way we want. We found a company that has an amazing product that I truly believe in and use. It is not a "get rich quick" scheme though. It takes hard work and time but we are starting to reap the benefits of what we have sown over the past year and are almost to our Lexus car bonus! Check out our website www.producefreedom.nerium.com. My number is (623) 810-9745. We have parties in Mesa all the time to build our business. They are fun and a great way to meet other positive people that want to take control of their lives. 😃
