sad people who make sad life choices make me sad.

6.04.2012

well today's post was supposed to be dedicated to the photos of the bridal shower i took on my canon dslr this weekend--i must say i took some adorable photos of all the little details, but instead someone who is awesomely sad in life decided to rob our house during the only 2 hours of the day we were out.

so instead of crawling in bed saturday night after a nice movie with my sister at my parents house, we came home to our door slightly open, things moved around in our bedroom, and $800, a camping knife, and (didn't realize this until Sunday) but both our Canon DSLR and Canon Film SLR cameras stolen.

The cops came, and while they were nice, they offered us little comfort, and without theft insurance, we're just kind of out of luck.

I could handle the money i had been saving for a computer being gone, because i didn't already have the computer, so it wasn't changing my life by not being here.
And I could handle the knife being gone, although i felt bad for Marcus since he had just bought it.
But Sunday morning, when i woke up and realized the camera's were gone, i went into total meltdown mode.
The tears finally came flowing and they didn't stop.
I thought i was okay after a sunday nap,  but then someone called me, and for the first time in my life, I started bawling to a near-stranger on the phone.

As far as monetary possessions, those two cameras are at the top of the list for me.
I love photography.
And those cameras have captured so many memories.
Inside the camera bag they took, are literally thousands of photos on SD cards of our life, our wedding, our honeymoon, and our holidays with family.
It makes me feel so ill to think that
1. we now have to save up to buy them again, but
2. that someone is either going to look at all those memories we had together, or erase them all with no care for what they mean to us.
Ugh...I'm so over this situation.
Sorry to be dragging you down with this, it's just that's why there won't be nice photos on the blog for a while.

I have to keep reminding myself that we still have lots of those photos on our computer, and we still have all of them in our hearts and minds.
And that, of course, it all could have been a lot worse.
And it helps that i still have these flowers in my kitchen and that Saved By The Bell is on Netflix InstantPlay.

Thanks for all the positive thoughts via instagram, facebook, and twitter. love you!

Oh my goodness! I am so sorry. I cannot imagine feeling so violated. Contact local pawn shops and let them know this has happened; maybe they can keep an eye out for the stolen cameras and knife.

A few years ago my parents house was broken into and of everyone who lived there I had the most stolen. I can absolutely understand the feeling you're experiencing but the main feeling that comes to mind is feeling violated. I remember coming home to the front door crow barred open and badly needing replacement. Every room was turned over, and when I came to My room it was by far the worst. Among the things that were stolen the only ones that I feel the saddest about were my lap top {full of pictures that I didn't have backed up anywhere else} and two necklaces given to me by my beau {now husband} at the time.
The police did find the two people that had been part of this sad "business" of theirs, but the only things I was able to have returned to me were one of those necklaces, an old debit card, drivers license and random mismatched pieces of jewelry. {sorry for making this comment so insanely long}.
Fortunately, I have been able to use this experience as a reminder of how much of myself that I put into 'things.' I never thought that I could cry over a ripped up mail or lost earrings, but then I saw all the things they could have taken and didn't. I hope for the best for you and Marcus. We'll keep you in our prayers. :)

I saw this on Instagram over the weekend and again I'm so sorry. It is indeed really sad that some people choose to live this way. Last year 110€ was stolen from my wallet, it was caught on camera and the police were, just like in your situation, nice enough but what are the chances of ever finding the guy? My fiance's iPhone was stolen back in September along with his netbook. The idea of someone having been in the apartment was so strange. And dear Ashley, I would cry for a whole week straight if someone stole my camera and I don't even have a nice camera. I completely understand. I hope a miracle happens and you are able to buy a new one asap!

I'm so sorry! I'd be so lost if my camera got stolen! People who steal are so inconsiderate and selfish. It really is sad.

So sorry that happened to you. Last summer, our neighbors on the other side of our duplex were robbed, even down to the wife's underwear. We were all gone for the weekend and no one on the street even noticed since everyone's a renter and probably thought they were moving out, even if they did see robbers. They didn't even touch our side but the drive back from where we were when we got the phone call was gut wrenching. Since then we have backed up everything we have that we can, got renters insurance, and documented everything that we own in case something happens.

I hope that your photos turn up. That's what I worried about the most.

AH! I would be SO FURIOUS if this happened to me. Photography is a huge part of my life! Good luck saving up that money to replace it. You can do it! >:)

I hope that somehow your camera photos lead them back to your blog and they read this post. I am so sorry, Ashley

I am so sorry for you both! You are absolutely right, material items can be replaced but memories caught on film cannot be. At least you can rest assured that some of the pictures were posted on your blog and are therefore at least not lost forever; another reason why blogging is awesome! I hope you can get another camera very soon and start making many more memories :)

I'm sorry you went through that. Someone broke into our car while we were in Sacrament meeting last year and stole my stereo. You just feel violated.
I'm glad i saw your facebook post yesterday and had my mom call you. She was glad that she could be there for you, and even though you "started bawling to a near-stranger on the phone"...shes not a near stranger anymore. xoxo

My heart is breaking for you, Ashley! I am so sorry. I had my wallet stolen a few days ago, and somehow the police were able to retrieve the contents. Hopefully a miracle like that will happen for you, too!! I'll be crossing my fingers for you!

That's awful! I'm so sorry :( I've had stuff stolen from me before as well and I know how terrible and violating it is.

i'm so sorry, that really does suck. i'm always super paranoid about leaving our house and something bad happening. i know how expensive cameras are bc my husband treats his like a baby. i hope things start looking up for you and i know they will.

Ashley, I am SO sorry this happened to you guys. This happened to me in February, and I had my tv, wii and laptop stolen. It is such a violating feeling, especially when someone has taken all the documentation of your personal memories. I don't understand why anyone would do something like this. I'm praying that y'all get your stuff back.

I'm so sorry, Ashley.
Cameras are one of the WORST most personal things someone can steal.

Julie Morrison said...

My heart is so sad for you! I am a photographer and I know how near and dear to your heart cameras can get. BUT they are just material items. You still have Marcus! It might take a little while, but you can buy a new one. Praying for you! xo

i'm so sorry about that ashley! people are so petty. were the cops able to lift finger prints or anything?

oh my goodness ashley, i am so sad for you! i know how much my camera means to me and cannot imagine having it taken from me. i had a film camera stolen out of our car along with my dad's nice camera when i was about 12 years old and it was my first camera and i was heartbroken. i also know how much dslrs cost and i hope that you will be able to buy new ones soon, but also am so sad about your memories you lost. we recently decided we need to double back up all of our pictures because i dont want to worry about our computer getting stolen or crashing. anyway, good luck!

I am so sorry to hear this! It's is the worst feeling ever when someone does a senseless act that you can't do anything about. :(

Ash, you nearly made me cry. This situation really upsets me. Which is funny because I constantly felt this way in Brazil, things like this happened all the time to us, close friends and family, and it has been a while since I have felt this way because I have gotten used to good ol' safe Rexburg. I am glad that you have such a nice attitude about it. Again I am so sorry. :( But I love you guys and the picture above is just the cutest thing.

:( traveling through europe, i've had a lot of things stolen from me....and all i can tell myself is what someone once messaged me after i posted on facebook that i'd been robbed in spain (for the THIRD TIME): "bad things happen to people who steal."

i think it's true.
but really....that sucks. :(

What a nightmare! Seems you're taking it well, despite the expected tears. I guess now the challenge is to see what you can learn from this. Just keep smiling your pretty smile and befor long rain and thunder will turn to sunshine and rainbows!

<3 i'm sorry this had to happen to you ! not long ago, my phone got stolen- and with it the hundreds of pictures i took during a trip to denver where i saw my idol in concert for the first time :'( it hurts to have the physical representations of memories you hold so dear ripped away from you, having no remorse on the other end. it feels like you've been violated- this person took things with such value to you without probably giving it a second's thought, and that hurts. <3 but we're here for you, and so is marcus! it may seem like the end of the world right now, but there will come a time (perhaps after a few more episodes of saved by the bell;) that you will reach acceptance, just as i did. i understood that there is no going back and preventing what happened, that those items i treasured were out of my reach now. and at one point you will too. (and sound more eloquent when you tell us about how you did! haha:) the light at the end of the tunnel is on it's way ;)

Ugh... this happened to me last year. It was completely awful, but like you said, I also got to see the best in my friends.

The worst part for me was the fear that came after the burglary. I had really bad PTSD for more than a year after it happened (it didn't help that there was a gang shooting outside our house 2 weeks after the burglary). I don't know if you're dealing with any fear after your ordeal, but if you are, and you need someone to talk to, or if you need to vent some anger/frustration/any other thought or emotion, feel free to email me at ashleynkoch@gmail.com, or to tweet me @ItsAshleyKoch. I know what you're going through, but trust me, there's hope at the end, and believe it or not, God will use this terrible trial for amazing things. He's really taught me to trust in Him throughout everything, and not to try and control every aspect of my life.
