It's a Barnum & Bailey World.

6.23.2011

Before you get married, you generally date people to find someone you're compatible with and want to be with for life's adventures.
Once you find that person and tie the knot, you move onto a new phase in life. It's an interesting phase. One that no one seems to talk much about.
You see, dating seems to take on a new purpose.
You start dating other couples.
You're now on the search for compatible married couples to be your friends.
It's one thing to find someone that I click with and it's another thing to find someone that Marcus likes, but it's a WHOLE different thing to find two people, who are a couple that both Marcus and I really connect with.
We were lucky and found that in Jack and Jenny, but they're in Idaho and we're in Arizona.
We need friends here. So we're on the prowl...
So, last night we went out with my cousin Michael and his sweet wife Melissa. I've always liked Michael and once I met Melissa, I knew we were kindred souls.
You see she has an obsession that fits hand in hand with mine.
She LOVES mermaid.
Like to the extreme.
If she had a blog, it would most likely be called i believe in mermaids.
In fact, I need to talk to her. She needs to get on that--ASAP.
The date was just about as amazing as it could get.
We went to the circus! And not just any circus.
The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus!
'Brothers Brawn' aka The Strong Men.
The Spanish Lion Tamer.
If you're in Arizona, I strongly suggest you go.
We got tickets for $12 and although we were in the nosebleed section, it totally blew our minds!
So much fun.

I can't wait so hang out with them again this weekend :)

My fiancee and I try to. Gosh we'd love to have a couple friend who is approx our age, but we barely have time enough for ourselves that it's hard four us to go on some Couple Dates. But one day we will :)

Haha I'm not married but when using this topic I've covered that exact phrase of "dating other couples" so I love that you posted it here! And the funny thing is it's totally true! I'm glad you were able to find another couple to go with and tell her that when she starts her blog, I will totally follow. ;)

this looks like an amazing date! i went to B&B with a girlfriend a few years ago, but it'd be so fun to go to with my husband. and i also have a cousin michael who married a melissa!

Yes! I can totally relate to this. Sadly, our best couple friends are moving away next month! We are soo bummed, but I think we have another couple who can step right in and take over. :)

totally! you are right on with the dating couples thing. my hubby and i are always on the prowl. its tough to find a couple where everyone clicks.

I just started following your  blog and I love that it's about your life and day-day activities as well as some fashion entries too.  I think it's difficult to find couples to hang out with with my boyfriend and we're not even married!  I tend to find that I either won't like one half of a couple that he knows and he's the same with the ones I know.  It can be awkward, but really fun, I imagine, once you find two people that you DO get on with!

I agree that its hard to find a married couple that we both connect with. We gone out with other couples a few times, but its not something we do often. I'd love to though!

Oh my gosh, I was totally going to do a post about this. I agree with you 100%. It is soooo hard to meet the perfect married couple friend. Mike and I have yet to find one.

We absolutely date other couples! It's hard to because I recently discovered that my boyfriend doesn't actually like a couple that we've been friends with for awhile, and I adore them! Now what do we do??

Cory and I have a a couple that always have a great time with when are able to meet up...now I'm thinking, Why don't we meet up with them more often? It's only once in a blue moon that we hang out and I have no idea why. I need to get on this ASAP...maybe we could plan a camping trip. Yup, this sounds like a great idea. And it's only recently that my little circle of friends has gotten married and this post makes me want to hang out with them more!  Great post Ashley!

ugh. I've totally written about this same thing, but with not as much luck as you. Couple dating is a million times harder than regular dating. Wanna move to Utah? eh eh? :)

My husband and I have been married for 4 years and still have yet to find that magical couple!  They are like a unicorn!  They exist but who knows where!

We found a really great "match," but then they divorced the month that my husband and I actually tied the knot.  :[  Now we just moved to Arizona so we're doing the same thing!

This is sooo true! I call it friend shopping... and it is harder than it seems.

Those elephants are beautiful creatures... so amazing to see them sitting like that.

I totally understand the dating couples thing... we are still trying to find out soul mates :)That looks like a really fun date though! And your cousin's wife seems pretty awesome! Who doesn't love mermaids?!

Dating couples is SO hard! The thing is is that you may love them but they'll never tell you if they don't love you! Then it's just awkward. I think that happened with the only couple we ever "dated." We need a new couple in St. George.

colbystephens said...

P.S I have no idea how to work this new comment thingy. Am I just dumb, or what? It's signing me in as my husband and not our blogger account.

My husband and I were talking about the same thing the other day! Its hard to find a couple we both like. Being in Alaska it seems that there is a never any single married couples or even dating couples. Glad you found someone, cross your fingers for us! P.S. I love the circus, sadly Alaska does not provide that joy for me.

Irene Navajas said...

well I'm not married yet, but I can tell you that I still go out with my friends alone and he does the same with his. We also hang out together with friends who might or not be couples, it's not a big deal. We just try not to be too cheesy ;) you know!
But as everybody grows up, we all start to get boy/girlfriends and include them in the group of friends. sometimes the couple works, so they stick together with the rest of the group. sometimes it doesn't, but the original group remains the same and I'm grateful that we can still all be friends and find the support after a breakup :(

Mary Mendoza said...

I never thought of it that way, but it's true :D You clever girl, you!

yes we do. we're in utah and need more friends.

the circus is awesome.

yep to the dating couples thing... you're right, it really is tough to find someone that BOTH people get along really well with.

Highheelsandbubblegum said...

I completely understand this dilemma.  Ever since my husband and I got married I keep thinking, "We need couple friends!"  But you're right, it is really hard to find people that you both want to hang out with.  If we lived in Arizona I think we could totally be friends :)

Shelley Sarina said...

Oh I hear ya sista! My Paddy and I talk about this all the time. We just recently met our new bestie couple Jody and Joe. We click with them so well! But lots of times you end up compromising and going out with a couple that one or the other doesn't have much in common with. {sigh} That's marriage! Excellent post! I LOVE LOVE LOVE going to the circus!
Cheers,
S.

Haha, I've never thought about dating couples! I guess my husband and I already had friends here when getting married, and we're both not too hard to please and easy to get along with. The circus seriously looks amazing. I'm so interested in those people's lives. Like really, what does that guy in the leather underpants like to to do in his spare time?

I've never been to a circus but it looks like a lot of fun. With school, work, baby, finding a night that will work with the other couple, etc, it seems like it's only when the stars are aligned just right that we go out with another couple. So I'm just glad to get out on a couple date, period, regardless whether we're kindred souls or not. aahhh... there, I said it! How do you do it?

Nikki Berezay said...

First of all, I am so glad there other adults in this world that love the circus, that don`t have kids yet! Second, I am relieved to hear that my husband and I aren`t the only couple struggling to find that perfect couple friend! It`s soooo hard! We`ve been married a year and have lived in three different places so that has been part of the problem but seriously, it is way to difficult!

Oh and P.S. Have you seen this blog? http://luckysoandso.com/ I saw her on TED.com and thought she was awesome. I also thought you would like her very much!

Sara Allen said...

We totally do this. I got such a kick out of reading this I had to share it with my hubby. We never thought of it as dating, I always called it 'trying other couples on'. We have yet to find our perfect couple match. Some day.....

p.s. that is zsallen.blogspot.com

We totally have that same problem.  My girlfriends are either single or with guys that my hubby isn't in love with.  And his guy friends, well, either they annoy me or their significant others do.  It's the hardest thing to find.  We do have one couple we love though, so thank goodness for them!

Robert and Emily Liddle said...

I had to read this out loud to my husband becaue it's so our life now. it's so weird trying to find people who work for both of us. we call them our "married firends" our strategy? have his best guy friend and my best girl friend get married. I'm pretty sure that would guarantee us friends for life.

Carolineray said...

It is absolutely essential to the "dating couples" thing.  After 12 years, the only thing we talk about are our kids and finances.  How boring!  Bringing a couple on dates with us helps us remember the good ol' days before we gained baby weight and had no worries other than what movie should we watch tonight!

Britt said...

Oh man! We so need to do the dating couple thing! We were the first of our friends to get married, so we have no married friends. It is a lonely planet when you have no couple friends to hang out with. What's your secret? You should definitely write a post about how to date couples. We need help!

Lauren Brimley said...

Yep. After almost 3 years we have only found a few couples that are great matches for us. And you guys are one of them!

Karen Beth said...

Circuses are cruel and exploitative.  Animals being held captive and made to "perform" is not and should not be entertainment.  There are at least a million cruelty-free alternatives that would make great date nights.

Kate said...

You might want to look into the ethics of the circus before promoting it. Eeek!

Also, usually I love everything about your adorable life!
