{Tunes} on Tuesday Featuring: Ryan Gosling

12.14.2010

So apparently this is devastatingly depressing and is rated something terrible (NC-17...what the?), but i just love this song--maybe it's because Ryan Gosling is singing it, or maybe it's because Ryan Gosling's mannerisms remind me eversomuch of my very own Marcus.

Regardless, I won't be seeing the movie, but I will continue to YouTube this and pretend it was the movie I wish it were and not the movie that is actually is...

here's mine:
I'm pretty good at the Argentine Tango. I danced it in the basement of ASU for two years. I love it.
Nobody I know has seen me do it though, just my classmates.

ah man I just posted how much of a major crush I have on him with gorgeous pictures and everything, so sad to find out this is rated R. Such a good trailer though.

I understand there has been an admonishment from LDS elders regarding not watching rated R movies, and I respect that members follow that counsel (I'm not a member). My general problem with ratings is that they are *so* strict on sexual content, but let so much violence go by. I'd much rather there be a scene between two people that love one another than see gory violent images of people killing and destroying each other for two hours...

Also, Schindler's List is rated R. I think that movie is one of the most beautiful, moving things I have ever seen, and treats the subject so honestly it is heartbreaking. Sometimes life is rated R, you know? For me, personally, I would rather see a true accounting of it, and be shamed by the tragedy, than watch a white washed, cleaned up version of history. So I guess I'm saying that just making a blanket statement to not watch rated R movies might cause one to miss out on some transcendent movies about our human experience. Certainly some movies are just plain trashy- um, Showgirls?? Striptease?? haha- but it's the Schindler's List kind of rated R movies that are worth it to me. Watching those movies is hard, no doubt. But it should be hard, because those people went through hard things.

Cortney, I totally understand where you're coming from. More recent council from our church leaders have been to use good judgement when choosing your media. I, personally, would rather keep the violence, language, and sex out of my mind so I tend to stay away from R unless they're edited because they usually have one of those things to an excess, but I also avoid a lot of PG 13 for the same reason. I've seen Schindler's List and it was very powerful, but still I'd rather just watch most movies on ClearPlay so I can filter out the stuff I'd rather not see. Obviously, everyone can decide for themselves what they will and won't watch.

They actually changed the rating from NC-17 to R, but you won't watch it anyways. Even though I know I shouldn't watch rated R movies, I kinda agree with Cortney a little bit, but mostly because I love horror movies and those are often rated R. I don't watch the ones with sex. To quote one of the best movies ever, Clueless, "Until mankind is peaceful enough not to have violence on the news, there's no point in taking it out of shows that need it for entertainment value. " haha

Have you seen the movie BRIGHT STAR? It's totally a different time period (early 1800's) and doesn't have Ryan Gosling. BUT it's one mushy lovey romantic story about the timeless poet John Keats and falling in love with "the one" and never giving up on them. You should definitely watch it if you're in need of a girly movie. And it's PG. So absolutely no worries there.

Oh, and the music is beautiful. Ever heard of a human orchestra?
