Several months ago now, Marcus' sister, Alice, insisted on babysitting Simon for us...we didn't resist to much :). Simon was 4-months-old and we had only been on one other date without him (2 months prior). I remember thinking we weren't gonna be that couple, we were definitely going to get babysitters every week and go on regular date nights, but parenthood quickly makes you learn, YOU ARE GOING TO BE THAT COUPLE for a lot of different things. So, word to the wise, just don't ever say, "I'll never..." because, you just might.

It's weird, it was one of those things that we didn't really realize we needed until we actually did it. While it was hard taking Simon with us when we went out to dinner, we also loved him so much that we liked being with him, so it didn't feel like a burden. But let me tell you, going out with just the two of us again--IT WAS GLORIOUS! We held hands in the car (instead of trying to dangle toys over a screaming baby's head the whole drive). We hugged and made-out in the parking lot (Oh yeah, we did!) and we just about cried doing it because it felt like we hadn't just plain old hugged without a baby in one of our arms in a lonnnnng time! It was just a lunch date at Culinary Dropout, another Fox Concept Restaurant that we love (I'm starting to feel like they should sponsor me, given all the plugs I give them...). Marcus had the Pastrami Sandwich and I always get their pretzel fondu...mmmm! We talked and ate our meals at the same time as each other (something you don't get to do with a high-needs baby at the dinner table). It was so refreshing. I know it's important to foster the marriage relationship, and it's something we're going to work on making more of a priority for sure!

Dates FTW! I like my Marcus.

Bag o' Tricks

3.17.2015

So, here's the thing: Being a stay at home mom is hard. There are all sorts of things you said you wouldn't do or think before you were a mom that you're probably going to do or think when you actually become a mom.

Like, it's Crazytown.

I remember when my sister had her baby, we'd ask her to go out to dinner with us or take a daytrip to the mountains and she'd rarely make it happen, using baby J as her excuse. I always thought, "She just must not really want to go...surely taking a baby along can't be that hard, I mean, have you seen how little those guys are?" But now that I'm a mom, I UNDERSTAND!

Nothing is like it used to be and when getting yourself and your baby to the grocery store makes you feel like you should be given a gold medal of achievement, I now understand why a 'daytrip to the mountains' seemed an impossible feat.

Sometimes it can drive you a little crazy, but the key is to find your tricks--because ain't nobody got time for a grouchy, coopted up mama--especially the mama!

For me, I have to get out of the house everyday. It can be as simple as going a few blocks over to my parents and playing fetch with Poppy in the backyard. I'm not much of a talker and my mom's not much of a babysitter (since she already had 8 kids of her own, she's kinda over it, I guess), so I'm still on full-time mom mode when I'm there, but at least there are other human speaking creatures around... and at least I got out of my bed.

My favorite days are Marcus' days off. He's been really good about humoring me with little family outings lately. Thank goodness he recognizes how hard it is for me, knowing I'm one who loved having a full list of 'to-do's' everyday and prided myself in checking them all off, now giving all my minutes to our baby and never getting any of my to-do's checked. These family outings make me feel rejuvenated and accomplished, plus I love seeing us a family of three! Simon is so much happier when we get out and are among crowds, or maybe it's just that he loves being worn close to mama all day and snoozing!

Baby-wearing is another one of my "tricks." Simon is SO content when he's in the ergobaby wrap. If he's fussing in Marcus' arms or in the stroller, I wrap him up and he almost immediately calms down and then falls asleep. It's such a secure feeling and likely reminds him of being in the womb. It's a relief for me, knowing I always have that up my sleeve! Plus it's a fun conversation starter. People are always asking me about or telling me how much they love seeing people babywearing (learn about the benefits here). Adult conversations AND compliments? I'll take it :)

The last 'trick' I've discovered, so far, is making sure I get at least a few minutes of 'me time.'

As a mom, you literally have NO alone time, I'm talking baby in the Bobby on the bathroom floor at times. Then there's the pup and the husband that want some attention too. So every night I pass Simon off for some daddy time and I go downstairs and clean--sounds super fun, right? But I'm telling you, it's the best. I'm alone and when Simon cries, I know there's someone else to attend to him, and I'm getting something done that I can see, and as strange as it sounds, it is like a little slice of heaven in my day! Haha #momlife

But guys, here's the moral of all this--even though Marcus' day's off have become as exciting as Disneyland, I finally lost my giant prego belly, just to basically put it back on everyday in the form of babywearing, cleaning up my house each night is my idea of heaven, and I've been pooped on twice this week, this is still somehow the best thing I've ever done and the most satisfied I've been in my life.

Now that's Crazytown.

And that's Motherhood.

Last week Marcus and i celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary. We unfortunately both had to work on the actual day, but we decided that weekend would be good enough for celebrations--so Friday night we went out and had a delicious steak dinner and Saturday we planned to take a day trip somewhere cooler (in more than ways than one) than Mesa.
Saturday morning I woke up and asked Marcus where he thought we should go--we named a few places we had been before, like Flagstaff, Prescott, or Sedona, but then Marcus said, "Ashley, you were born and raised in Arizona and you've never been to the Grand Canyon--that's where we need to go!" He made a compelling argument...so we threw some things in a bag, hoped in the car with Poppy, and we were off!
It was lovely to watch the car thermometer drop the further we drove.

Because it's a canyon--there's not really anything to see until you're right on the edge of the cliff, as we parked and walked toward the look-out I was a little confused as to how anything that's supposed to be so spectacular could really be in front of me when all I saw was some desert forest, but oh-my-gosh was I wrong! When we got to the edge my breath was literally taken away--over and over again, every time i looked down into the canyon, I felt like the wind got knocked out of my chest. I'm not even one to fear heights--I'll always go to the edge of a cliff for a pretty picture, but this was unlike any cliff I had ever experienced--and as I looked out at it's expanse my mind had no way of comprehending that I was only seeing a tiny portion of this truly grand canyon. It was no wonder to after that, why Arizona holds one of the Seven Wonders of the World titles. I hope you all get to experience it someday.
We ate dinner on a restaurant porch overlooking the canyon as the sun began to set and talked about our future. It was such a beautiful evening with my best friend. I'm so lucky.

where i talk about baby animals and i can't stop.

Last weekend we got done with dinner quite early and since it wasn't over 100 degrees outside, we decided to take a quick stroll around the Mesa Temple to enjoy the gardens and watch the sunset. While the weather was not particularly enjoyable, it was bearable, and bearable is something we strive for here in Arizona during the summer months (unfortunately). Right was we turned the corner to one of my favorite little spots on the temple grounds, we saw one, then two, then three cottontail rabbits. They were so tiny and hoppy i thought i had entered a fairy tale! Their little tails truly looked like you glued on a little cotton swab to their behind! I was enamored--this shouldn't surprise you, coming from a girl who has spent far too many afternoons watching "Too Cute" on Netflix--but seriously, that show IS TOO CUTE!

Baby humans are cute and all, but baby animals!? Don't get me started...

The winner is Justine S.! Congrats!
I love being married, but anyone who's been married for more than a few years likely knows that you can start to get stuck in a rut and date nights quickly turn to lots of dinner and a movies...
Just before we headed off to Costa Rica I was contacted by the fab people at Phoenix POGO. They told me about their awesome year passes and offered to let Marcus and I test them out. Basically you buy a pass and you get admission into all sorts of fun things around Arizona for one year. There are some restrictions on what days you can go or how many times you cans go certain places, but for the price, you only have to go to a few stops before the passes are more than paid for.

It was seriously JUST what Marcus and I needed. We've been really struggling with ideas on what to do and have ended up spending way too much of your free time on the couch watching Justified (anyone else watch it on Amazon, we're addicted!).

Now whenever we need to get out of the house we just open our POGO Pass app and pick an adventure. So far we've been to the rock gym twice and the Sea Life Aquarium once. Both were so much fun--next I think we might try the indoor trampoline park. I'm nervous for that one, but it will be fun to give it a try in our 25 and 26 year old bodies ;).
POGO Pass is giving one of my readers the lucky chance to win two passes to use here in Phoenix!

twenty-five.

11.27.2013

Last Thursday I turned a quarter of a century old.
It has been an age I have dreaded for a while now. In my mind I'm still 17, my older brother, who is now in his mid-thirties is still 25 to me, so how in the world am I supposed to be 25?

It was a strange and sort of boring day in which i found myself getting emotional on multiple occasions--each occasion, I quickly let the logical side of my brain, tell the other side how silly it was being.

It would happen I would think about the real fact that likely more than 1/4 of my life has already happened.

As I've gotten older, the years seem to fly by faster than I can seem to remember. Why as a child did it seem like it took unimaginable lengths of time for each new Christmas to come and now, as an adult, I blink and it's back again?

At my birthday dinner, conversations with Marcus lead to us discussing my quarter-life-crisis. He said something simple, but just what I needed to hear.

"Time goes by fast, this should be the perfect kick in the pants to get us into gear about taking control of our life and doing some really awesome stuff, so that when each new year sneaks up on us, we can look back at it and say, 'Yeah, you were awesome and ready for another.'"

This discussion empowered me. I love my husband. I'm lucky to have him by my side, supporting and encouraging me. I'm lucky to have family and friends who love me. I'm thankful for my online community both here on the blog and my instagram friends--it sounds silly, but i love having a creative outlet.

Here'e to twenty-five! I've got this.
I hope you all have a wonderful thanksgiving on thursday!
If you're looking for a last minute holiday craft--check this one out from last year.

a night at the fair!

11.07.2013

printed on real film! i was stoked
This llama was such a poser, we loved it.
Every year i leave the fair wanting a goat!
WALLABY!!
 Baby calf
the fair has pretty much everything you could ask for: a petting zoo, rides, pretty lights, deep fried twinkies, photo booths, and floor to ceiling walls of denim bedazzled purses...what is NOT to love about the fair? I look forward to it every year, drag marcus to, and then he ends up having a great time.
(his FIRST time to the fair was with me when we were dating!)

we spend most of our time in the agriculture building--this year we met the cow farmers and had a good hour chat, they invited me out to tour their farm and even had us in the milking booth and let us milk the cow with our hands! I was as terrible at it as i was excited.

we then won a free ride ticket and went on truly the most terrifying ride of our lives, also, the funnest.

i'm already excited to go again next year.

do you have a fair in your state? how is it?
