{For Fashion's Sake} Saturday: Week Prep School

12.11.2010

Next time I try this outfit, I'll have Marcus tie my bow tie...haha I had no idea what I was doing, as you can tell.

The Breakdown:
Denim Shirt: J.Crew Outlet $34
Bow tie: J.Crew (ebay) $Gift
Navy Pencil Skirt: Thrifted & Altered (Jones of New York) $4
Leather Heels: Nordstoms $Gift
Leather Belt: J.Crew Sale $18
Pearl (long necklace, turned bracelet) My mother's drawer...

ARE YOU READY FOR ANOTHER LESSON IN FASHION?
Here's a Tip. When wearing a pencil skirt, wear it at your natural waist line.
Do you know what that is?
It's the smallest part of your midsection, usually located near your belly button.
We have become a generation obsessed with hip-hugging and low rise apparel, but when you try and pull a pencil down across your hips it accentuates your widest part, instead of your smallest.

See example:
This lady is tiny,
but because of where her skirt hits,
she looks wider than she otherwise would.

It also creates this weird baggy crotch, muffin-top look, that well, isn't flattering.

Take a look:

While, admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of this skirt,
look at the difference the placement made!
Generally, pencil skirts just weren't designed to be worn low, so if you aren't comfortable wearing clothes a little higher, the pencil skirt is probably not for you.

***Exception to the Rule:
If you are really linear (i.e. your waist and hip don't really create a contour) you might be able to pull off a pencil worn low

Do You Agree or Disagree?
Seriously, you can fight me on this one if you want.

I LOVE pencil skirts.
For whatever reason they fit my awkward mis-shapen pelvis/hip region so perfectly. High waists are where it's at- I wish more ladies would follow this trend. I'm sick of cracks hangin out all over the place. ha

I completely agree. I tried on a pencil skirt the other day in my size but it was hanging really funny on me. I tried bringing it up to my natural waist line and it looked great; however, the waist line in the skirt was made to hug the hips so it would not stay on my waist.

I love pencil skirts however they don't really fit my body type. However I substitute with a column style skirt (like an a-line but with a lower waist line so that it doesn't emphasis the midsection on someone who is larger.)

However I agree that except in rare cases like you showed - that a pencil skirt should not be worn low waisted.

i completely agree with the placing issues, but i never really have been a fan of pencil skirts. i don't know if it's the length or the fabric. i know mid length skirts were ALL OVER the a/w catwalks, but they still aren't my cup of tea. love the blog, xoxo

I ALWAYS wear my pencils at my natural waist line. Actually I pretty much wear ALL my skirts at my natural waist line. Low rise just feels weird now.

I absolutely agree. And, that's why I love pencil skirts so much, I get to wear them higher and they're super flattering!

Agreed. Love your advice, keep it coming!

I totally agree. Wearing them at your waistline is super flattering. It just... cuts your body into the right proportions. I don't really know how to explain it. Most of my skirts are at the natural waist (or at least close to it). I think it really helps to create that super feminine hourglass figure, which is great for me since my body type is super straight.

i love pencial skirts, especially when they are worn correctly! that can be tricky though. worn too high or too low, they just don't look good.

you look spectacular.

LOOOOOVE Pencil skirts! I can make a TON of super cute outfits with them. I'm a size zero (no I'm not lucky, it means I have NOOOO curves at all) so pencil skirts really help show off some shape. Love the bow tie too, I'm not so sure if I could pull it off

Ooh, I love your preppy look! Whenever I do a top knot, it falls straight off my head, haha. I'm so challenged in the hairdo department.

I too am a fan of a high-waisted skirt. It's a classic look.

You look darling with a bow tie!! Love that look. You can just pull off anything, can't you?

p.s. Super excited about your drink recipes below!! yummmaaayyy!

I agree! Sometimes though, because I have hips, I think emphasising the smallest part of my waist makes my hips look bigger.

Oh well!

Just discovered your blog and it's adorable.

I love pencil skirts! I work in an office so they are easy to dress up or down depending on how I feel. I generally only wear them to work though so outside of that I don't get much use. Love the belt though! And the hair!
