the things we find in draft.

1.10.2013

hello ladies! i just found this post i wrote in my 'draft folder' but i guess it never posted here on the blog.
(since the dress is now in shop my closet i decided i'd post it.)
In Idaho, I used to live right next to a lumber yard.
Everyday, going in and out of town, I was thrilled by it.
I loved the textures, the lines, the colors, and the shapes each log provided; and I especially loved the masterpiece they created together.
Aren't the beautiful in all their imperfect glory?
I find myself being turned off by perfection--I prefer interest.
After dreaming about it for months, I finally got up the courage to ask if I could take pictures in their workyard, and wouldn't you know it--they said yes!
The lighting wasn't ideal, but it also wasn't raining or snowing, so we took what we could get.
I'm so happy we worked this shoot in on one of our very last days in Rexburg.
The Breakdown:
Maroon Dress: Vintage
Leopard Belt: Forever21 $3
Trouser socks: Macy's $2
Leather Heels: Rocket Dog $60ish

worth it.

Yesterday I caught Marcus reading my blog.
Actually, I didn't catch him. He was sitting next to me at the library when all of the sudden he turned to be with the IHEL look in his eyes to tell me he loved me.
I wondered what had brought about such affection. He looked embarrassed and wouldn't tell me. After some gentle probing, he admitted that he was reading the first two tabs on my blog (A Lovely Love Story and Us.)
and the memories made him happy. I could tell that he felt good knowing that I was so happy with him.
We've only been married for about a year and a half and even still, remembering is our favorite thing.
We regularly talk about our engagement and how much we hated going home at night.
We talk about our wedding and being surrounded by our family.
We both were so full of love, I'm sure those around us feared a human explosion.
We talk about our 7-week honeymoon adventure, and how it was well-worth the wait.
I read out-loud from my journal, and we laugh about the early stages of dating.

And then we remember when we moved back up to school and the reality of life began.
And it was beautiful.
Lots of days are busy and 'regular.'
They aren't always filled with magic and romance, but we still get giddy when we're done watching a movie and we know we get to go snuggle in bed. We appreciate it, because we remember what it was like when we couldn't.
We can't wait to see each other after a long day of work because we're each other's best friend.
Little notes around the house showing appreciation can still be found under a pillow or taped to the mirror, because we know courtship isn't over.
It's beautiful to know that he's always there to hold me up when I'm feeling down, and that I'm always there to listen to his dreams in the morning.
Sometimes the reason I'm feeling down is silly, but sometimes his dreams are silly, too.
The best thing we can do for each other is to remember the good times, not to judge each other for the bad times, and just love, and receive love in return.
Afterall, that's what a marriage is all about, isn't it?

{Tunes} on Tuesday Featuring: A Smile and a Ribbon

I simply adore this song.
I get so happy when i sing it, even if I'm quite sure it drives Marcus a little crazy...
It also goes quite nicely with my little guest post over at Cardigan Empire today.
It's part of a wonderful little series that I implore you to explore.
Right over here, ladies!

p.s. Reachel, of Cardigan Empire, happens to be a super fashionista, not to mention an adorable writer, so I highly recommend browsing her archives...

{Top Five} Friday Featuring Jenny Thomas, Nail Guru

4.15.2011

Hey Ya'll!
I'm on my way to sunny California, so I asked one of my very best friends, Jenny, to fill in for me. She's studying graphic design and definitely knows her colors.
That's why I had her choose her {top five} must have hues for every occasion.
Hello there unicorn believers! So I am here guest posting for Ashley. It is the very first time I've done this. So I am a little nervous. I wouldn't say I am a Nail Guru but I am definitely a big time nail polish enthusiast! This year I had the goal to do my nails every week. And now that classes are starting and I am working   at the same time it seems a little impossible but I have only missed one week so far!

So like Ashley said I am going to give you my {top five} must have hues, and here they are:

1. Everyone needs a dark nail polish. It could be black, or a dark brown or in this case a really dark chocolaty red. Wicked by Essie follow the link to my post about it. And I just love dark nail polish with really short nails. :)

2. Glitter! Another must have is a 'party in a bottle' nail polish. The example I have in the picture will make you smile in the gloomiest of days. The one I have on is called Gems by Milani (or as my husband likes to call it 'unicorn sneeze') which is a dupe for the original Happy Birthday by Deborah Lippmann.

3. Red! Classic and timeless you can't go wrong with  red. I prefer the true red. But you gotta have some sort of red. The one above is A-List by Essie (can you tell I love Essie?) and Ashley has told me about another really good one by Essie called Fishnet Stockings. (also beautiful with really short nails.)

4. Nude/light/neutral here is why I like this category: clean, versatile and when it chips you can barely tell! The one you see above is in my top 5 favorite nail polishes ever. It is a brazilian nail polish (gift) called Chic Pele by Colorama but I believe that Essie's Boy Best Friend or Sand of a Beach are pretty similar.

5. And last but not least a 'unique' color. Choose one that will be your 'signature' color! Turquoise, coral, teal, mint. Find the one that you love! The one I have above is called For Audrey by China Glaze (Tiffany Blue).

So there you go ladies. If you have these 5, you are good to go! ;) A lot of my friends tell me they can't do their nails so why would they buy it? But that's how I started. Just watch some videos on YouTube, get informed! Its a lot more affordable this way and it makes a wonderful girls night activity (Ashley and I had many of these!)
So what are YOUR must-haves?

Jenny

In lieu of my regular {Top Five} I'm going to send you over here.
My bloggy friend lady ashlee is doing a fun series on her blog and she featured me today!
So, check it out.

In case you're wondering, this is not what it looks like in Idaho right now.
I'm just wishing it were.
This was taken last summer in Ashton, Idaho in the same place we got engaged, but a week earlier.
We were at a friends cabin for a BBQ and when Marcus saw the place, he knew it would be the perfect place to propose.
It was.

Also, if you saw the handwriting game post I did yesterday, do yourself a favor and look at this
Can you have a crush on handwriting?

A Hairy Situation

12.02.2010

I'm pretty stoked about this new do!

This morning I had my laptop on my vanity table as I studied this picture.

  • I began by spraying my whole head with aerosol hairspray because I have fine, silky hair, so the hairspray added body and texture.
  • Next I parted my hair far over to the side.
  • Then I took my small (1/2 inch) curling iron and grabbed pretty big sections, wrapping the hair around the barrel, starting at the root of my hair (rather than rolling it up from the bottom). I only held it there for about 10 seconds, because I wanted it to be a loose, random, messy curl.
  • I would also switch up the direction that I curled, some I curled going backwards and some going forward
  • After I finished about a third of my head I hair sprayed it again.
  • Once I was done with the curls (only took about 5 minutes) I teased the hair at the crown of my head and the bottom few inches of my hair because its thin down there.
  • I held the 3 sections loosely from my head as I braided. I also didn't worry if I overlapped in the wrong place because mistakes in this braid actually look really cool.
  • Finish it off with a clear elastic.
  • Once I finished I sprayed it one more time.

And there you have it--{My} Messy Side-Braid.

What Do You Think?
Are You Going to Give It a Try?

For the Record.

10.24.2010

(I am aware that most of you have already read this story via BBL, but seeing as the reason I started this blog was to keep a record of my life, I decided I needed my story in my own journal.)

I have this theory and I believe it is the reason for my abounding good luck. I am convinced that thoughts are much more tangible than most people think. I’m not implying that they can actually be touched, but that they have an existence outside of the thinker’s mind.

I believe if you think about something enough, with enough passion and faith those dreams go out into the Universe and sort of float around until they find the right person, in the right situation to facilitate the dream. This theory has been proven time and time again in my own life. And I believe that subscribing to this theory plays a huge part in it accuracy. I once referred to myself as the Queen of Coincidence, although, I don’t think it’s coincidence at all, but perhaps God keeping me entertained.

In 2004 The Notebook came out. I was a sophomore in high school and while most women were acclaiming its debut, that movie simply made me depressed. For two weeks, anytime I thought about it I would start crying. I realize that this seems bizarre, but for me, it was too darling. I looked around and did not see any boys who could provide such classic romance. Mostly, I did not see any boys who would ask me to dance in the middle of a quiet street. That was really my main concern. I needed someone to dance with me in an obscure place, under unlikely circumstances. I thought about that need for a long time. I cherished the thought, and then I let the thought go--Up and away, into the Universe.
Time went on and I stopped crying about The Notebook. I made some charming guy friends who restored my hope in classic romance. I dated some fantastic boys who took me on fantastic dates. They even danced a bit, but the dancing seemed always to take place in the socially accepted locations. So, I lived a charming life, always with something to be desired.

I knew my idea was out there, but it hadn’t found the right person to land on just yet.

One day I met a certain Marcus Nielson. I was cautious, like I always have been. Sure he was handsome, certainly he was suave, of course he came from a wonderful family—and while these things were nice, I had seen it all before; I was looking for something extra.

One evening after stopping in at MOJO on Mill we decided to stroll Tempe Town Lake. We made our way to the art center located at the very west of the park. In front of that edifice is a shallow decorative pool. My feet felt a little grimy from walking around, so I told Marcus that we should put our feet in. He was a little surprised by the idea, after all this water feature was definitely not for wading, but I can be pretty convincing and not a minute later, our shoes were off, our pants rolled up, and our feet submerged.
In embrace we stood in the pool. The night was quiet and the stars made the water twinkle.
Ever so subtly I felt him swaying. I held still to make certain I was not directing this occurrence. Yes, yes, it was him. Slowly, the swaying got more pronounced, until there was no denying the dancing motion. Then came the music, not from any outdoor speakers, but from the lips of he who swayed. Marcus was humming, a slow tune, as we danced close in the water.
And there it was. My dream finally found its landing spot. While we hardly knew each other, I had a feeling this was more than a coincidence…
The next few months were a whirl of movies, Coldplay, dancing, symphonies, sushi, ABBA, fairs, pumpkins, black tie events, photos, costumes, dreamcatchers, kisses, forts, and conversation.
Now there was only one problem. Marcus was only here for the semester before he headed back to BYU Idaho. Even with our whirlwind romance, he was still leaving and I still did not know what that meant. Regardless of the future I was grateful for the experience, but my heart still craved answers. I thought I might be falling in love, but did not know if he shared the idea. Unrequited love was indeed a scary thought, one I had never encountered, but I decided to keep my thoughts inside. After all, I did not even know how to formulate those words naturally in my mouth.

One evening we sat close on the couch in the parlor and read to each other about dinosaur love, narwhals, marines, nursery rhythms, and Germany. And then we got closer, but did not kiss, nor talk much. We mostly just looked. A lot of looking. A lot of thinking. I was not at all aware of what his mind was brewing, but mine was cooking with thoughts of Idaho visits...would they be welcome? uncomfortable? nonexistent? Through the silence he spoke, "My heart is pounding so hard!" His breathing was rapid and loud. He was holding tight. The thought of Love darted across my mind and was quickly gone. Marcus would never be decisive enough to declare such a statement here and now, without my assurance. But there was something clear about it. For the first time in my life I wanted to hear those words. It was something that I did not dread, but actually desired.
Then he spoke, "I… love you. There I said it."
My eyes shot open like the idea of its' actuality had never crossed my mind.
"You do?! Are you sure?" I quickly retorted.
"Yes, I think so."
"Well, good...because I think I do too."
"I don't know why that's so hard for me to say, but I've never said that to anyone before. I hadn't thought about it until right now, and then it just felt like it, so I had to say it."
I laughed and commended his bravery. This act of spontaneity was not in his nature and truly shocked me.

I fell asleep that night slightly nervous. Thoughts were suffocating my breathing space: What did this mean about us in the future? What if when he really analyzed what he had just proclaimed, he regretted his dauntlessness? Or what if I regretted my confession? How did I know I loved him anyway?
But then something happened that at least soothed one of my worrisome thoughts. I woke abruptly at 5AM. I wanted him near me. Now. I was anxious for his proximity. My legs wiggled and my shoulders jumped. I could not stop smiling in nervous excitement. Sleep eluded me. I wanted to tell him that I DID love him! I knew it now. The entire day was spent in trying to keep that all-telling grin off my face. My cheeks literally ached.

When I finally saw him that evening, I felt like I had been missing one of lungs and it was found. Complete. I loved my place in his arms...and I love that all my dreams now have a landing spot.
